The hidden fire hazard in almost every home in the US is the clothes dryer!
Long Island, NY – John Ryley, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard of Long Island, NY, recently spoke to a group of homeowners about the hidden danger of clothes dryers. John said, “Actually the clothes dryer isn’t the real danger; the dryer exhaust ducts and the dryer vent system are. Over time, lint build-up in the dryer exhaust ducts blocks air flow, causing overheating which can result in a devastating fire.”
One guy in the group spoke up, “I clean my vent every Spring, when the weather warms up. I reach in, from outside, to get as much as I can.”
John was happy to hear that some consumers are aware of the importance of dryer vent cleaning, as he explained, “What you are doing is better than doing nothing at all; however, it isn’t enough to ensure your safety. There are tools available for the homeowner who likes to do the job themselves.”
John described the attachment one can buy; an auger brush with flexible rods that can be attached to a drill. “There are also a variety of other hand tools that can be purchased at your local hardware or home improvement store,” said John.
John Ryley has a desire to promote dryer fire prevention as he educates consumers on the importance of proper dryer vent maintenance. “I recommend a professional inspection and dryer vent cleaning at least once a year. We have the necessary tools and equipment for getting to all the areas of your dryer exhaust ducts and dryer vent system.”
John explained how some dryers are located in the basement or upstairs where the bedrooms are; some are located on inside walls, requiring a longer dryer duct with hard to reach areas. All dryers must be vented to the outdoors; some are even vented through the roof.
“With some systems, the average homeowner cannot do an adequate job. The fee for my service is little compared to the devastation caused by a dryer fire. Of course, there are always going to be people who would rather do their own maintenance. Though I don’t recommend homeowners do this job themselves, I would rather give them advice on where to purchase tools and how to be more effective than to hear about them losing everything to a dryer fire.”
John Ryley recommends that everyone, even the do-it-yourselfer, at least schedule an inspection of their dryer vent exhaust system to be sure it meets today’s UL safety standards. John Ryley provides dryer vent cleaning, repairs and inspections for the Long Island, NY area, covering all of Suffolk, Nassau, Kings and Queens County.
